RE: Info on clear hurricane panels by Hurricane Preparedness Expert

Clear panels are often polycarbonate designs with a standard 15 inch width (coverage 13.75) and are modular – they deploy as inserts one next to the other for coverage. Some are made of Lexan XL-10, a strong material similar to bullet proof glass. There are many manufacturers of these clear panels and can be used in combination with the steel or aluminum panels. Polycarbonate or clear panels often have restrictions on size or length associated to the attachment methods. They can deflect when deployed or stacked in combination with other clear panels. Review your specifications or installation drawings to make sure you apply them within the recommended restrictions maximum design pressure ratings (psf). They offer an excellent way to provide light and transparency into the confines of the home when in use. Check with your local building codes and product review applications like Florida Building Code on-line http://www.floridabuilding.org/c/default.aspx or Miami-Dade NOA’s. Some clear panels may be used for the HVHZ (High Velocity Hurricane Zones) areas while others may not be rated for these HVHZ coastal storm protection.   I recommend using a clear panel insert with aluminum panels for added strength and light. The added transparency gains of a complete coverage with clear panels may negate the strength and protection of the same opening if it’s a large opening. A single clear panel insert allows for the necessary light and won't reduce your strength or protection as much. They can cost almost twice the cost of steel and aluminum panels, but adding one or two clear panels for added light won't increase your budget by much. It can be costly to completely cover every window with clear panels.
